Dangers Without Borders

These are some of the hero and supporting illustrations for Digital Public Square’s Foreign Interference Resilience Initiative Project, titled ‘Dangers Without Borders.’ The work brings attention to the issue of transnational repression—“when foreign governments reach across borders to intimidate, coerce, or harm diasporas and critics.” The illustrations depict scenarios of troubling situations that are recurring. The published web article can be found here.

Harrassment: Victims are disturbed by late-night phone calls, suggesting their actions are being carefully watched by overseas governments.

Censorship & Surveillance: It is difficult to voice personal opinions as foreign spies are hidden amongst the population.

Electoral Interference: Like puppetry, strings are pulled via digital means to interfere with local elections.

Arrival: Leaving their hometown behind, refugees are forced to adapt to the new world they escaped into.

Protest Recordings: Participation in protests and rallies may be recorded and reported.

Fear: Victims give in to unreasonable demands in exchange for their families’ safety.

Silence: Unwillingly, victims choose to stay silent due to threats.

Alone: Victims face a lack of support and clear reporting options.
